Who was the shortest man in recorded history?

Chandra Bahadur Dangi, a Nepalese man, held the title until his death in 2015, for the shortest man ever documented at a height of 54.64 cm (21.51 in) as verified by Guinness World Records. Chandra (1939 – 2015) broke the title previously set by Gul Mohammed (1957 – 1997) of India, whose verified height was 57 cm (1 ft 10 in).

Junrey Balawing of the Philippines is confirmed on his 18th birthdsay as the shortest man living (non-mobile) at a height of 59.93 cm (23.6 in).

July 2020 - Open

Junrey Balawing (June 1993 - July 2020) passes away leaving the non-mobile record holder title vacant.

2008 - New Record Title Set by He Pingping (74.61cm / 2 ft 5.37)

He Pingping, China, holder of the Guinness World Record as the shortest man in the world who is mobile, confirmed by Guiness World Records.

March 2010 - Edward Niño Hernández

He Pingping (1988 - 2010) dies at just 22 years of age in March 2010. The title for shortest man living and mobile passes to the 24 year old Colombian male, Edward Niño Hernández, whose height is verified at 70.21 cm (2 ft 3.64 in).

October 2010 - Khagendra Thapa Magar

Khagendra Thapa Magar from Nepal is confirmed as the world's shortest man alive in October 2010. His offical height measurement is 67.08 cm (2 ft 2.41 in) with a weight of around 6 kgs. Until age 18 (born 1992) he also held the title for the shortest teenager living (male).

February 2012 - Chandra Bahadur Dangi

Chandra Bahadur Dangi (1939 - 2015) was confirmed as the shortest man living and mobile by Guinness World Records at a height of 54.6 cm (21.51 in). He also gains the title of the shortest man ever measured.

Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal is reconfirmed as the world's short man alive at 67.08 cm (2 ft 2.41 in) upon the death of Chandra Bahadur Dangi (1939 - 2015).

February 2020 - Edward Niño Hernández

Khagendra Thapa Magar dies suddenly in January 2020 and Edward Niño Hernández of Colombia regains his earlier title as the shortest man living. He is also re-measured with a new confirmed height of 72.10 cm, slightly taller than earlier records.

December 2022 - Afshin Esmaeil Ghaderzadeh

Afshin Esmaeil Ghaderzadeh is confirmed as the shortest man living (mobile) at an officially recorded height of 65.24 cm (2 ft 1.6 in).





He Pingping Profile

He Pingping, holder of the Guinness World Record as the shortest man in the world who is mobile until 2010, died at just 22 years of age. He Pingping was a mere 74.61cm (2’ 5.37”) when officially measured by Guinness World Records in 2008. His shortness was a result of a form of primordial dwarfism. His father He Yun claimed He Pingping was only as small as a palm at birth.




He Pingping who was born in 1988 in Huade County in Wulanchabu, China (Inner Mongolia) spent much of his time travelling the world at event launches, TV shows and photoshoots. He was in Rome taking part in a television show when he suffered chest problems and it was later confirmed he died of heart complications. He Pingping was said to have smoked around 2 packs of cigarettes per day.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday commenting on this sad loss said that for such a small man he had made a huge impact around the world. "He brightened up the lives of everyone he met, and was an inspiration to anyone considered different or unusual”.
