The huge chocolate egg, built in 2005 was made to commemorate the renovation of Belgium's largest market square ("Grote Markt") and headquarters of Guylian in the city of St Niklaas.

It took 26 craftsmen 525 hours altogether to build this enormous Easter Egg. This Easter egg was supported by a shell of metal scaffolding with wooden panels. Although the Easter egg was never meant to be eaten it contained 50,000 chocolate bars or around 1950 kgs (4,300 pounds) of chocolate all from the Guylian factory.

Guylian beat the previous Guinness world record holder for the world's largest Easter egg set by the Rotary Club of Piet Retief, KwaZula-Natal, South Africa, on April 4, 1996.
