Niek Vermeulen from the Netherlands has one of the strangest hobbies imaginable - he collects air sickness bags.

Niek has held the world record for the largest collection of air sickness bags since 1986. At the time of setting the world record for the largest collection of air sickness bags in March 2008 his collection included 5468 bags from more than 1066 different airlines.

Niek Vermeulen - Guinness World Record Holder for the largest collection of air sickness bagsNiek, a marketing and investment consultant, got the idea of collecting airsickness bags (also known as barf bags, sick sacks, airsick bags, motion sickness bags) in response to a bet with a friend to create a new world record by collecting the most of any one item.

Parts of the aeroplane sickness bag collection which he has been collecting since the 1970's is on display in the Guinness Museums in Orlando and Las Vegas and in the Openluchtmuseum Arnheim. One of the most prized items in his collection is an airsickness bag from the NASA space shuttle Columbia which spent 16 days in space.

Not content with collecting just airplane sickness bags Niek also has a large collection of airline playing cards which is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands and most likely one of the 10 largest collections in the world.

The Worlds Longest Attack of Hiccups

The world's longest attack of hiccups lasted a total of 68 years according to the Guinness Book of Records. Charles Osborne (1894-1991) from Iowa, USA was unable to find a cure for a protracted attack of hiccups that started in 1922 and ended suddenly in February 1990. Mr Osborne died just over a year later in May 1991 having led a normal life, marrying twice and fathering 8 children.

The attack began while Mr Osborne was attempting to weigh a hog before slaughtering it. Over the years Mr Osborne hiccupped up to 40 times a minute, slowing down to 20 a minute in later years. It is estimated that he hiccuped about 430 million times during the hiccup attack.

Suffering from the world's longest attack of hiccups had compensations for Charles Osborne. The popular board game Trivial Pursuit featured a question about him. His condition also resulted in guest appearances on Ripley's Believe It or Not! in 1936, ABC's That's Incredible! in 1980, and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1983.

Belly Button Fluff World's Largest Collection

As we all know belly button fluff or navel lint accumulates in the navel. Most of us like to get rid of it as soon as possible but Graham Barker from Perth, Australia has been collecting his own navel fluff since 17 January 1984 in order to study it.

Graham was recognized in November 2000 by the Guinness Book of Records as the record holder for collecting navel lint. Graham collects about 3.03 mg per day of belly button lint. "Some people gaze into their navel for inspiration. I look into mine and see navel fluff," says Barker, whose aim is to collect enough navel pickings to stuff a pillow.

Graham found that his navel fluff changed over time starting with a green tinge, then red and more recently blue. He attributed this color variation to changes over time in bath towel colors.

Reasons for belly button fluff have been speculated about for years until Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki of the University of Sydney, Australia surveyed 5000 people in his navel lint survey. He found that:
  • Navel lint consists primarily of stray fibres from one's clothing, mixed with some dead skin cells and strands of body hair.
  • Contrary to expectations, navel lint appears to migrate upwards from underwear rather than downwards from shirts or tops. The migration process is the result of the frictional drag of body hair on underwear, which drags stray fibres up into the navel.
  • Women experience less navel lint because of their finer and shorter body hairs. Conversely, older men experience it more because of their coarser and more numerous hairs.
  • Navel lint's color appears in a characteristic blue-grey. The color is most likely an average of all clothing colors worn.

The Worlds Longest Leg Hair

Recently we told you about the world's longest beard ever measured now we bring you more medical marvels with the world's longest leg hair ever measured on a human body.

The title of the Guinness Book of Records for the longest leg hair is currently held by Wesley Pemberton, a doctor from Dallas, Texas, USA. Wesley set the world record back in February 2008 on a TV Show in Madrid, Spain. The leg hair growing on his left calf was measured at 16.51 cm (6.5 in) long at that time.

Wesley keeps the hair in great condition including washing it with conditioner to keep it strong and healthy. He was stated as saying that he was "going to pluck it and hang it next to the certificate” once he had officially had the leg hair measured for the title but later changed his mind.

Before Wesley Pemberton earned the title for longest leg hair the previous title holder was Tim Stinton from Australia who in February 2005 held the record for the world's longest leg hair which measured 12.4 cm (4.88 in).
