He Pingping who was born in 1988 in Huade County in Wulanchabu, China (Inner Mongolia) spent much of his time travelling the world at event launches, TV shows and photoshoots. He was in Rome taking part in a television show when he suffered chest problems and it was later confirmed he died of heart complications. He Pingping was said to have smoked around 2 packs of cigarettes per day.
Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday commenting on this sad loss said that for such a small man he had made a huge impact around the world. "He brightened up the lives of everyone he met, and was an inspiration to anyone considered different or unusual”.
He Pingping's successor as the world's shortest man is yet to be announced. Khagendra Thapa Magar from Nepal who is reportedly 51 centimetres (20 inches) high is likely to claim the title now that he has turned 18 years of age and unlikely to grow further.
